Girls on Dresses- Abisola, aka Abimarvel, on the Objects of her Dress (Hire) Desires, & Dresses of Eras Past
Your first ever dress was: Gosh. I suppose my earliest memory was when I was 6 and is that of a lilac dress that stopped just below my knees. It was from Macy’s New York, the actual brand, I’m unsure about, but it had this cute brocade top to it, then a silk skirt. It was short sleeved and just quite lovely. I remember being in grand central station and this random well dressed man came up to me & my family and said he liked my dress and handed me this brand new perfume bottle, ’til this day I still wear the perfume.
Your oldest dress: A simply stripey jersey dress I bought from Warehouse, that I have worn way too much! I bought it around 3 or 4 years ago, believe it or not, I don’t have many clothes now from before then.
Your most expensive dress: I’m not a huge spender (yet), being so young and all, but I recently bought a quant little dress from Whistles that cost £95. Actually now that I think about it, my prom dress cost just under £300, so that would be the most expensive dress.
Seen the most dancefloors: A slinky creamy coloured dress I bought from ASOS. It’s slightly loose at the bottom, goes in, in the middle then flows down to just above me knee. It’s a keeper.
Favourite dress: It’s a simple cream summer dress that has a pretty floral embellishment on the body part, with an overly flowy skirt. It’s sleeveless and perfect for summer! It’s from ASOS.
What was the last event you wore a dress to and what did you wear? I would say the last, proper event I went to was my birthday party a couple weeks ago to which I wore this ASOS Stripe Shirt Dress, which was such a great buy! It’s a super lovely dress.
Mini or Maxi? Ooh that’s a hard one, I don’t want to be obvious and say ‘it depends on the situation’ but it kinda does. Okay, here goes, I’m going to say maxi.
Who are your red carpet idols? Who always gets it right? Easy, I’d say Cate Blanchett, Zoe Saldana, Anne Hathaway. Cate’s red carpet style is my favourite, whether she’s wearing a magnificent gown by Givenchy or a vintage Christian Lacriox, she always looks out of this world!
What is your most memorable dress moment? Wearing a dark sweeping maxi dress to the first day of fashion week last season. It was a weird moment because I thought, ‘oh dear, people are goingto think I’m a complete spectacle and that I should keep it a lot more simple for fashion week’, but it worked and I got loads of complements, which I didn’t expect. I almost didn’t wear it, in fear that I trip over it as I was walking on the cobbled Somerset house pavements, but alas, I survived.
Which dress would be top of your Girl Meets Dress hire lust list? It would probably be the Carven drape detail dress. It’s a lovely colour, great shape and seems to fit really well and wouldgo from a day to night outfit, oh so easily. Though the patterned shirt dress by Anna Sui, is simply divine. I literally can’t stop looking at it!
As someone who always has a new event to attend – how would Girl Meets Dress dress hire complement your life? Wow, in so many ways. I know some people think it’s a myth that people in fashion don’t like to wear the same dress twice, but it really isn’t. Whenever you see red carpet stars or editors at events, you never say, ‘oh she wore that last time’ because she never has and will probably never wear it again – well at least not to a high profile, paparazzi snapping event, so for me, with all the events I go to, Girl Meets Dress provides me with the opportunity to not only have to never worry about wearing the same dress twice to an event, but to look amazing whilst wearing them!
